Renovation of BIS Chennai South Regional Office: Preserving structural integrity, realising a modern vision

Originally built in the 1960s by IIT Madras as an experimental structure, the BIS Chennai South Regional Office posed a unique architectural challenge due to its unconventional use of hollow core slabs in place of traditional reinforced concrete (RCC). The building required a careful balance between preservation and modernisation. Recognising the need for a comprehensive upgrade, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) undertook a renovation to transform the facility into a state-of-the-art administrative centre that meets contemporary operational demands while retaining its structural heritage.

A collaborative and detail-oriented approach was adopted, involving close coordination with BIS to align the design with their vision and operational needs. Detailed structural assessments were conducted to inform the necessary reinforcements. The renovation was executed with strict adherence to quality control protocols, ensuring high standards of workmanship throughout the process.

The renovated BIS Chennai South Regional Office now stands as a modern, efficient, and future-ready administrative facility.
